GABBY LEE
Gachi
About the artwork:
Gachi
까치 (gachi) is a Korean word that represents the magpie, a symbol of good fortune, but with a slight change in enunciation, it holds the meaning of “together,” 같이. Seen are a mother and daughter sewing 조각보 (jogakbo), a traditional patchwork technique; each piece of 조각보 is unique to the maker and her journey.
My piece hopes to convey the intergenerational dream for an auspicious future while simultaneously honoring the past.
About the artist: Gabby Lee is an illustrator and background artist for animation. As a Korean immigrant learning English through her favorite cartoons, she nurtured a love for art and storytelling from an early age. Reserved but observant, her works explore the quiet introspections of her daily life.
Gabby has worked as a background artist at Awesome Inc and Bento Box for clients such as Netflix, Apple TV, and Adult Swim.
